[Suggestion] Increased resolution and smoother graphics rendering

Recommended Posts

Hello ROSEA,

As this is my first post and I believe first dialogue with any member of the ROSEA team, it's a pleasure to meet you and thank you for hosting a great Ragnarok server! Congratulations on your success.

We all know Ragnarok is an aging game and at times the game does not agree with our more modern day hardware and graphics drivers. There are a few issues to consider, but the first one that comes to mind is the infamous black dots. This is generally related to the NVIDIA GTX line of graphics cards and their counterpart drivers, see below for an example:

This issue can quite easily be fixed by refocusing the windows context, e.g ctrl+alt+del, full screen etc, but is known to crash frequently thereafter. Annoying.

The other less annoying issue is that of screen resolution. Many of us in the good ol' days enjoyed running Ragnarok in borderless fullscreen mode. If you're unaware, that basically means running the game in window mode at your native desktop resolution, minus the windows border and menu. That allowed us to have all the benefits and immersion of Fullscreen gameplay, as well as the almost must-have ability to alt-tab quickly. With screen sizes and resolutions getting bigger and bigger, it's not uncommon for players to have 2560 * 1440 and above resolutions, which Ragnarok simply won't render in.

Now I do believe that the black dots bug has been fixed, either in the new Ragnarok client that you are using here, or in one of the recent NVIDIA drivers (the latter of which I doubt). But there are also some other quirks that seem odd about the client, such as ghosting. Has anyone else noticed that when you use a emoticon whilst moving, it seems to flicker?

There are more, but I don't think I need to indulge in all of them to prove my point that there is absolutely room for improvement. Well, there is possibly a solution.

Above is a wrapper for the more ancient revisions of the DirectX / Direct3D APIs that the Ragnarok graphics engine was programmed to. It effectively allows us snobs running DirectX 12 capable  cards a more native solution to rendering graphics.

Here's further reading where a player on TalonRO (apologies if naming other servers is against rules) had success in using this with his/her Ragnarok client.

The unfortunate problem is that Gepard's anti-cheat protection software does not allow unexpected DLLs (dynamic linked libraries) injected in to the Ragnarok executable at runtime. That's pretty reasonable, but unfortunately, that's commonly how graphics hooks work.

Could we please open up a discussion about a way around this as I do think that this could be of great benefit to some players who experience lag and graphics glitches.

I'm sure that there must be a reasonable and safe way for this to be implemented and I would be happy to offer any insight where possible.

@Qayela We realised this issue during the early implementation of the 2017 client. The custom dll implementation to fix the graphics glitch/lag as well as add support for modern graphic cards are already implemented in the upcoming 2018 client. We are currently testing the client and the release is expected to be around July/August. Any custom dll must be implemented before the gepard patch is applied, we do not give technical support on bypassing the memory integrity check for end users.
